This lesson focuses on why the Normans built castles after the Battle of Hastings. Pupils have to work out why the Normans needed the protection of the castles and also use a map to work out where they had the most conflict.

There is a gap fill activity, some questions on the strengths and weaknesses of the wooden structures and then they have to draw and label their own picture of a motte and bailey castle.

The lesson contains a two page worksheet with the map starter on a PowerPoint.

I use this as my first lesson in a castle project. The students study the arms race of the medieval period through the changes in castle design.
